PLANFORLAB participates in the 9th Spanish Forestry Congress

The Spanish Forestry Congress (CFE) is the most important event in the forestry sector in Spain. This event brings together researchers, technicians, landowners, and forestry management professionals for a week to share scientific advances, experiences, and discuss the future of our forests.

In this context, PLANFORLAB was represented by Francisco Dans Del Valle (AFG), Raquel Díaz Vázquez (CIF Lourizán), Francisco J. Lario Leza (TRAGSA), and Julio Ruiz Cagigal (AFG).

During the presentation session, the importance of creating a network of laboratory forests in different regions of Spain was highlighted, where improved genetic materials of three key conifer species are currently being tested: Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata, and Pinus sylvestris.
The goal is to increase the resilience and productivity of coniferous forests, promoting innovation and knowledge transfer between researchers and industry professionals.

Participation in the 9th Spanish Forestry Congress was a unique opportunity to share experiences and knowledge on sustainable forest management. From PLANFORLAB, we thank and congratulate the organizers for the successful participation and for creating a relevant dialogue space for the sector.

PLANFORLAB participates in the Silleda Green Week

On June 5 and 6, PLANFORLAB participated in the 47th edition of the Galicia Green Week (Semana Verde de Galicia), held at the Feria Internacional de Galicia ABANCA fairgrounds in Silleda. This event provided an excellent opportunity to present the project’s progress in a key environment for the agri-food and forestry sectors.

PLANFORLAB was part of the FEUGA exhibition space, whose stand hosted a total of 16 innovation projects related to rural development and sustainability. Thanks to this participation, we were able to showcase our objectives, results, and innovative approach, as well as connect with other industry stakeholders and establish strategic synergies.

Our presence at the Green Week helped reinforce PLANFORLAB’s position as an initiative committed to the sustainable transformation of society, standing out for its active contribution to improving the sector.

We continue working to bring innovation to the region, with the firm purpose of responding to current challenges and generating a real impact on rural communities.

PLANFORLAB will participate in the 47th edition of the Galicia Green Week

PLANFORLAB will be present at the 47th edition of the Abanca Galicia Green Week National Fair, which will be held in Silleda from June 5 to 8. Considered one of the most important multi-sector events in the northwest of the peninsula, the fair will bring together 746 exhibitors from 6 countries and will offer a varied program combining professional activities—training and demonstrations—with leisure and educational proposals for the general public.

PLANFORLAB’s presence will be channeled through its partner FEUGA, at stand E17 in hall 2, with the aim of promoting its mission to create laboratory forests for experimentation and learning about new forestry practices and improving the resilience of commercial coniferous forests.

Throughout the fair, the FEUGA team will answer any questions related to PLANFORLAB, sharing its progress, objectives, and contribution to the agri-food and forestry sector.

Technical Seminar of the Supra-autonomous Operative Group PLANFORLAB

The Supra-Autonomous Operational Group PLANFORLAB, “Network of laboratory forests with improved plants to increase resilience and production in coniferous forests”, will organize a technical seminar next Tuesday, April 1 at 11:00 AM at the Hotel Palacio de Aiete, in San Sebastián. This session will present the project’s main progress and its impact on forest management.

This operational group represents a collaboration between leading entities in the forestry sector with the aim of improving the status of coniferous forests. To this end, innovations in improved genetic material and adaptive silviculture are applied, implementing the innovative concept of the laboratory forest, understood as a forest area dedicated to experimentation, research, and the development of new sustainable management strategies.

Project Benefits and Innovations

PLANFORLAB seeks to improve the resilience and productivity of coniferous forests through:

  • Greater resistance to pests and diseases, including the pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), Fusarium, and red and brown band needle blight.
  • Adaptation to climate change, through the implementation of silvicultural models that optimize forest growth and stability.
  • Improvement of wood quality, promoting the economic sustainability of plantations.
  • Development of innovative genetic material, with the production of new improved plants of Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata, and Pinus sylvestris.

To achieve these objectives, advanced forest reproduction techniques, both sexual and vegetative, are being used to obtain plants of high genetic quality. These will be evaluated in experimental plots within the laboratory forests.

During the seminar, representatives of the entities participating in the project will present their work and explain the positive impact that PLANFORLAB will have on the forestry sector.

Following the technical session, there will be a visit to the laboratory forest of Azpeitia, in Gipuzkoa.

PLANFORLAB will be attending the 6th Abanca Cimag-GandAgro Professional Trade Fair for Machinery, Agriculture and Livestock

The 6th Professional Trade Fair for Machinery, Agriculture and Livestock, Abanca Cimag–GandAgro, will be held at the Feira Internacional de Galicia ABANCA (Silleda) from February 20 to 22. This event has established itself as a benchmark for innovation in agriculture and livestock farming, offering professionals in the primary sector a space for networking, analysis, and business.

PLANFORLAB, through its representative partner FEUGA, will be present at the fair. FEUGA will host the technical session “Innovative strategies in the forestry sector”, which will explain the objectives, activities, and expected results of several ongoing projects, including PLANFORLAB.

We also invite everyone interested to visit their stand (G13), where FEUGA professionals will be available to answer any questions. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about the latest innovations transforming the agriculture and livestock sector and to contribute to the sustainable development of our rural areas.

Presentation Day of the PLANFORLAB Operative Group

The Interregional Operational Group PLANFORLAB presents its project to increase resilience and production in coniferous forests.

Santiago de Compostela, January 31, 2025 – The Interregional Operational Group PLANFORLAB will organize a presentation event next Thursday, February 6, at 10:15 AM, to introduce the innovation project “Network of laboratory forests with improved plants to increase resilience and production in coniferous forests”. This initiative aims to improve the condition of coniferous forests by applying advances in the development of genetic material and adaptive silviculture, using the innovative concept of laboratory forest as a means.

The PLANFORLAB project focuses on developing new improved plants of the species Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata, and Pinus sylvestris, in order to increase the resilience of forests against pathologies such as pine wilt nematode, fusarium, and red and brown band diseases, as well as the effects of climate change. Additionally, it seeks to improve wood quality, fostering the economic sustainability of foresters and promoting sustainable forest management.

During the event, the project’s objectives, ongoing activities, and progress will be presented. Attendees will also learn about the sustainable innovation actions that PLANFORLAB will implement in the forestry sector to improve wood quality.

The event will feature interventions from representatives of some of the entities participating in the PLANFORLAB Operational Group, who will share their vision and the key role they play in the project. Among the speakers will be the Galician Forest Association (AFG), the LOURIZÁN Forest Research Center, Empresa de Transformación Agraria S.A., S.M.E., M.P. (TRAGSA), and the Galician University-Business Foundation (FEUGA). However, the PLANFORLAB Operational Group is not limited to these entities, as the following members are also part of the consortium: Federation of Forest Associations of Castile and León (FAFCYLE), Confederation of Foresters of the Basque Country (CFPV), Confederation of Spanish Foresters’ Organizations (COSE), NEIKER Technology Center, University of Valladolid Foundation (UVa), and the Forestry Research Institute of INIA-CSIC.

GO PLANFORLAB: Network of forest laboratories with improved plant material to increase resilience and productivity in conifer forests

PLANFORLAB is an operational group whose objective is to improve the health and productivity of conifer forests through innovations in genetic material (Forest Reproductive Material, FRM) and adaptive silviculture practices. Using the forest laboratory concept, the project seeks to strengthen forest resilience against pests, diseases and climate change, benefiting timber producers. The project focuses on the development of improved plants of Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata and Pinus sylvestris, using innovative genetic material.

In addition, PLANFORLAB will create a digital network to exchange experiences and results on genetic improvement and strategies against forest pathologies. The project is aligned with the objectives of the European Innovation Partnership (EIP-AGRI), promoting sustainability, climate change adaptation and competitiveness in the forestry sector.

The main objective of the PLANFORLAB project is to develop new improved forest plants and optimise the sustainable management of conifer forests. This will be achieved through the creation of resilient models to address diseases and climate change. The specific objectives include:
1. To create a network of forest laboratories that enables scientists and forest managers to observe and monitor the behaviour of Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata and Pinus sylvestris in response to pathologies and climate change.
2. To implement innovative technologies for the production of improved forest plants through collaboration between nursery companies and research centres.
3. To improve the prevention and control of forest pathologies through the use of genetically improved plants, harmonising monitoring methodologies and promoting the use of high genetic quality plants in reforestation.
4. To create a digital collaboration network to share data and results among the actors involved and the potential beneficiaries of the project.
This project aims to strengthen the resilience of conifer forests and promote their long-term economic sustainability.

The results expected to be achieved with the PLANFORLAB project are as follows:
1. Establishment of three forest laboratories, one in each of the participating autonomous communities: Castilla y León, Galicia and the Basque Country, with the design of innovative silvicultural models for the species Pinus pinaster, Pinus sylvestris and Pinus radiata, aimed at reducing the risk of pathologies and improving resilience to climate change.
2. Production of improved reproductive material (through sexual and vegetative propagation) of the aforementioned species Pinus pinaster, Pinus sylvestris and Pinus radiata, to be established in the forest laboratories using silvicultural models and the material generated for trials under controlled greenhouse conditions.
3. Establishment of trial and demonstration plots in the forest laboratories, with a minimum of 2 hectares each, which will allow data comparison and the evaluation of the resistance of reproductive materials to pathogens.
4. Creation of a digital monitoring network that will facilitate access to data on the forest laboratories and trial plots, promoting the dissemination of results to foresters, service companies, nursery operators and other stakeholders.

Operational Groups, the main actors in the implementation of EIP-AGRI (European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability), are one of the key tools in the implementation of the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2023–2027 to promote innovation in the agri-food and forestry sectors within the European framework. It involves the grouping of agents with different profiles but common interests, such as farmers, livestock breeders, companies, research centres or training and dissemination organisations, who come together to implement an innovation project in order to provide a joint and multisectoral response to a problem or need.

The PLANFORLAB presentation webinar will take place as part of the “Suelos vivos” event.

Launch event for new innovation projects by supra-regional operational groups in the agri-food and forestry sectors.

  • The project presentation event will take place on 5 December at FEUGA in Santiago de Compostela, and will also offer the possibility to attend online.
  • The projects, which have received a grant of over half a million euros for their implementation under the 2023 call of MAPA and will run for four years, stand out for their collaborative and multidisciplinary nature.

Santiago de Compostela, 28 November 2024. On 5 December, FEUGA is organising the Launch Event for various innovation initiatives selected under the call for grants supporting the implementation of innovation projects of general interest by supra-regional operational groups of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP-Agri), within the framework of Spain’s CAP Strategic Plan (PEPAC) 2023–2027.

Thus, a total of six projects will be presented:

SESSION A. Adaptation of agricultural and forest soils to climate change:

  • GO CLIMALACT: Development of protocols and sustainability indicators for the “CLIMALACT” label.
  • GO PRERIVID: Prediction of vineyard water requirements for the sustainable use of irrigation water. ​​
  • GO PLANFORLAB: Network of forest laboratories using improved plant material to enhance resilience and productivity in conifer forests.

SESSION B. Increasing productivity and preserving agricultural and forest soils:

  • GO OLIVITECH: Optimisation of olive cultivation through technological and aerobiological analysis.
  • GO Ash4Soil: Enhancing the productivity of soils, agricultural crops and forest plantations through a soil amendment derived from the valorisation of biomass ash.
  • GO MAXI-coberLEG: Maximising the benefits of cover crops through the selection of winter legume species and crop management practices.

Additionally, this event is part of the “Suelos vivos” conference organised by FEUGA to mark World Soil Day. The aim of the event is to promote knowledge transfer and highlight innovative practices that contribute to the preservation and restoration of soil health, ensuring long-term sustainability. In addition to the presentation of the aforementioned operational groups, the conference will showcase the latest advances from European research projects focused on soil health through keynote speeches, flash talks, posters and workshops.

The CLIMALACT Operational Group aims to develop a sustainability and climate neutrality label, the CLIMALACT brand, applied to the Asturian and Galician milk production system. It considers a joint analysis of both the farm and the value chain in order to identify and implement best practices. This Operational Group is coordinated by FEUGA and involves the participation of Campoastur Productos y Servicios, Corporación Alimentaria Peñasanta (CAPSA), AGACA and Asociación Intereo, with the Silvopastoral Systems Research Group of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) acting as a subcontracted member.

On the other hand, the PRERIVID Operational Group seeks to address the challenges posed by climate change through the development of a tool designed to enable the sustainable use of irrigation water. In addition to FEUGA, this project involves the technology company Monet Tecnología e Innovación S.L., as well as the wineries Quinta Couselo, Quinta Sardonia and Bodegas Enguera. The project also involves the participation of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC), through the Projects and Planning Group of the Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering in Lugo; the Instituto Tecnológico Agrario de Castilla y León (ITACYL), through its Viticulture Group; the Centro de Investigaciones sobre Desertificación (CIDE – CSIC, Universitat de València and Generalitat Valenciana), through the Water and Crops Group; and the Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y del Vino (ICVV – CSIC, Universidad de La Rioja and Government of La Rioja), through the MedWineQuality Group.

The PLANFORLAB Operational Group aims to contribute to improving the condition of conifer forests through the development of new improved forest plant material, using the innovative “forest laboratory” concept. The innovations arising from the project will help conifer forests grow under improved conditions, strengthening their resilience to the pests and diseases that currently cause significant damage, as well as to the effects of climate change This project involves the participation of the Asociación Forestal de Galicia (AFG), the Federación de Asociaciones Forestales de Castilla y León (FAFCYLE), the Confederación de Forestalistas del País Vasco (CFPV), TRAGSA, FEUGA, and the Confederación de Organizaciones de Selvicultores de España (COSE). In addition, the Centro de Investigación Forestal de Lourizán, the NEIKER Technology Centre, the Fundación General de la Universidad de Valladolid (FUNGE UVa), and the Instituto de Ciencias Forestales (INIA-CSIC) act as subcontracted members.

In turn, the OLIVITECH Operational Group aims to promote a more sustainable use of plant protection products in olive cultivation by developing a tool to estimate the risk of fungal infections.

This project involves FEUGA, the technology company Monet Tecnología e Innovación S.L., and the producers Aceites Abril S.L., Deoleo Global, and the cooperative Oleand Manzanilla Olive S.Coop.And. The project also involves the Research Group in Agro-Environmental Systems (GISA) of the Universidade de Vigo (UVigo), and the Systematic and Applied Botany Research Group of the Universidad de Córdoba (UCO).

For its part, Ash4Soil aims to improve the fertility of acidic soils and increase productivity in forest and agricultural plantations through the development and use of an amendment–fertiliser material called Ash4Soil, derived from forest and livestock by-products. Ash4Soil is coordinated by FEUGA and involves the participation of Greenalia, Álvaro Rodríguez Eiras S.L.U. (ARESA), Agrobarcenilla S.L., Sociedad Cooperativa Galega A Carqueixa, SELGA, Compañía Galega de Silvicultores S.L., and Almacenes Boina S.L., in addition to the Silvopastoral Systems Research Group of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) as a subcontracted member.

Finally, Maxi_CoberLEG promotes the use of cover crops, such as annual winter legumes, which improve soil structure, retain water and nutrients, enhance microbial activity, reduce weeds and pests, and fix nitrogen, thereby optimising soil quality and plant growth. This strategy is presented as a key tool for addressing the main challenges facing today’s agriculture, such as climate change, agri-food quality, and environmental sustainability. These challenges are particularly critical in crops such as citrus fruits, which are threatened by pests, invasive diseases, soil erosion and desertification. The project is coordinated by FEUGA and the Misión Biológica de Galicia (MBG-CSIC), with the participation of the Centro de Edafología y Biología Aplicada del Segura (CEBAS-CSIC), the companies Masía El Carmen S.L. and Bio Varsella S.L., and the Cooperativa Agrícola de Pego.

In addition, the Universitat de València, the Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias (IVIA), and Darwin Bioprospecting Excellence S.L. also participate in the project.
